Design 5 : Finishes

In this module we will cover how to create and manage 'Finishes'.

Updated this week

Creation of Finish Locations

When we create locations within the finish division, we’re defining the foundational areas where items will be applied, without specifying the exact type of item at this stage. This is different to the locations for other Divisions such as 'Furnishings' that we just looked at.

For example, a floor location can accommodate different types of finishes, such as:

Slab flooring

Tile flooring

Wood flooring

Vinyl flooring

At this point, we’re simply identifying the location as a floor. The decision about the specific type of flooring will come later in the process, allowing for flexibility and collaboration during the design phase.

Defining and Assigning a Location: Floor Example

Step 1: Create the Location

The first location (as per the table below) is a Floor.

Action: Create a Floor Location within the space Primary Bathroom (117).

• Once the Location is created, you can determine the Type of Finish you want to apply to the Floor Location, such as tile, wood, or stone.

Step 2: Assign an Item ID

Action: Assign an Item ID to the Floor Location with the Type you want to allocate to that Location. For example, assign an Item ID defined as Wood Lock Flooring.

• If you need to change the flooring type, simply assign a new Item ID to the location with a different type.

This flexibility allows for easy updates, ensures finishes are consistently managed, and simplifies decision-making, keeping your project adaptable as design choices evolve.

In this Finishes Training Module we will:

  1. Create the Plumbing Schedule Structure,

  2. Assign Item ID's and Items to the Schedule

  3. Create the Finishes Room-by-Room.

  4. Link the Locations (drag) to the Room-by-Room

In the next Training Module - Plumbing we will take a different approach.

  1. Create the Plumbing Schedule Structure.

  2. Assign Item ID's to the Schedule (not add the Items)

  3. Link the Locations (drag) to the Room-by-Room

  4. Add the Items to the Room-by-Room directly.

You can choose the workflow that suits your style, but this step-by-step approach ensures clarity and consistency in your process.

Let’s now follow the Finishes process outlined above for the Primary Bedroom and Bathroom!

Below is a list of locations and finishes we wish to add to the Project.

The Design Process challenges we have addressed in this module.

  • Complex Finish Management: Managing project finishes can be both complex and time-consuming. The structured process in the Design.efficiently Platform simplifies and streamlines this task, allowing you to handle finishes with greater efficiency and precision. By organizing every detail in a cohesive workflow, it reduces errors, saves time, and ensures consistency across the project.

  • Powerful Item ID's: The Item ID serves as a critical link between the Location and the Catalog Item, unlocking powerful functionality within the platform. As you’ll discover in the upcoming Item ID training module, this is just the beginning of how impactful Item IDs can be. They streamline updates, ensure consistency, and provide unmatched flexibility in managing project details.

  • Linking the Schedule & the Room-by-Room: Forget the hassle of creating the book and then updating the schedule line by line. With the book directly linked to the schedule, changes made in one are automatically reflected in the other. This seamless integration delivers:

Accuracy: Eliminates duplicate entries and ensures nothing is overlooked.

Efficiency: Reduces manual updates, saving valuable time.

Consistency: Keeps your Room-by-Room book and schedule perfectly aligned at all times.

  • Collaborative Project Management: Working together as a team instead of tackling a project alone marks a significant improvement in the design process. With Design.efficiently, team members can collaborate effortlessly—sharing updates, exchanging feedback, and contributing in real-time to ensure alignment and clarity across the board.

This approach enhances productivity, strengthens communication, minimizes mistakes, and creates more unified project results. It’s an innovative and connected solution for managing design projects effectively.

New Skills Covered:

  • Create Finish locations

  • Create and use Location Templates

  • Manage Locations information

  • Assign Item ID's to multiple locations

  • Add Items to Item ID's from Room & Item ID Schedule
